The short answer is no — Thai massage does not have to be painful.
If you have never had a Thai massage before, you may have heard that it is very strong, with a lot of pressure, stretching and firm movements. That can sound a little intimidating, especially if you prefer a gentle and relaxing massage.
But there is something important to know: the pressure is up to you.
You are in control
Everyone is different. Some people enjoy a stronger pressure, while others prefer something much softer and more relaxing.
When you have your massage, simply tell your therapist what feels comfortable for you. If the pressure is too strong, just say so and your therapist can adjust it. You can always ask for less pressure — there is no reason for a massage to be uncomfortable or painful.
And if you are unsure about what pressure you prefer, you can simply start gently and see how it feels.
What if I just want to relax?
Thai massage may not be the only option.
If you are looking for a calm, relaxing experience and don’t want strong pressure or stretching, an oil massage may be a better choice for you.
The most important thing is choosing a massage that suits you — not what you think you are supposed to choose.
